There are (what we think) are questions you may have about the game. If you have more, feel free to reply below with one! Skip to a section: GENERAL ⚫ APPLICATION ⚫ GAME WORLD General Questions What is this game? Recursion is about characters awakening to new powers while finding out the life they've been living is a lie, regaining their memories of their homeworlds, and fighting back during the night to find the answers to their many questions. I know nothing about the Persona video games. Will I still enjoy this game? You don't need canon knowledge since Recursion is a self-contained story. It's inspired by Persona 3, 4 & 5 and are a few reoccurring themes from the Persona universe (such as the Velvet Room and the Shopping Channel), but newcomers will be able to understand what is going on. Persona usage has also been modified from the games to be very simple and easy to play, with strong emphasis on group participation. What does being Awakened or The Awakening mean? Before characters regain their lost memories, they are more or less a clog in the city's system. However, once they remember their old memories, they become an Awakened. The process of regaining those memories is called The Awakening. Most Awakenings are very hard for the characters both physically and mentally. What canon(s) can I apply from? We accept canon characters and canon AUs (such as Cloud from Kingdom Hearts and so on). You may also apply an OC, a CRAU (with up to 1 previous game's history), or a Fandom OC (although these will also be judged on a case-by-case basis). Player-created main characters, such as the protagonists of Mass Effect or Dragon Age games, will be judged case to case basis. What are the Activity Check Requirements? There are two ways to make AC! One is an open network post, log, or top level plus 7 comments. The other is 10 total comments. You can use multiple threads for AC! Additionally, there is a bonus system used to modify personas and gain new group skills and weapon upgrades. While these may be based on post count, this is not always the case. Typical bonuses examples are request to tag new players, starting threads with a specific prompt, or doing a log that is detailed in the Velvet Room Requests. These are changed slightly every AC month. ▲ TOP | ▼ NEXT Application Questions What can my character bring with them? Due to the game's premise, your character has nothing from their old world - no powers, no weapons, no clothing. As far as they know, they've been living in Eddan their entire lives. While it may be possible to regain certain items and powers down the line, essentially all characters start off the same with one Persona, one weapon and one gun. Can I apply for a character that is dead in canon? Yes! That will make for a very interesting Awakening. I play a robot/pony/non humanoid. Will they keep their original form? Not all the time. During the day, they will keep the human forms that they were given in this world, but after Awakening, they will revert to their original forms at night. Any character above eight feet will also be reduced to that height. As a note: other Awakened characters can also catch glimpses of the character's real form during the day. The best way to explain it is that it works a lot like the anime Wolf's Rain, where humans see the wolves as humans only, but the wolves see each other as wolves. It can sometimes lead to comical situations. (How is that pony driving that car?? Don't let the pigeon drive the bus!) My character can already summon a Persona. Do they have to start over like everyone else? Yes. Summoning from the heart is different from other Persona summoning methods. Since their other Personas are 'locked up' in their mind, they will not be able to access them. Can I apply as resident of the Velvet Room? Yes. However, they will be unable to use their powers just like the other Persona canon characters. Can I create my Persona by myself? As part of your application, you will be asked to list your choice for your character's Persona's branch type, styles, and passives along with your chosen Heart Demon. Once this is approved by the mods and you're given your spells, you're ready for the next step. Players are free to design what their character's Persona looks like when summoned. What can a Demonic Persona look like? Anything your heart desires. The demons can look humanoid or be based off objects and general descriptions are included on the Demons page for you to use (or not use) as inspiration. The maximum height of a persona is three times the character's height (but it can be tiny as well, if you like). Here is a list of various examples from Persona 4 to give you ideas. Players can draw on their character's canon for inspiration for Persona design. A Pokemon trainer might have a Pokemon-like demonic persona, for example, or characters who had alternate selves in their canons might see traits of that form in their demonic Persona. Just keep in mind that it can't look exactly like something from canon.. ▲ TOP | ▼ NEXT Game World What is the city like? How come my characters never noticed anything wrong? How come will be something characters will learn as the game progresses. However, for the most part, the city's populace acts normal and the city itself looks like any other city in the world. Citizens go to work, attend school, obey the traffic laws, browse the internet and post terrible memes... It is only when a character is Awakened that they notice that a few things are off - for example while there is an airport, no one ever seems to leave; the world news tends to be repetitive and almost...bland; and all the buses bound for locations outside the city seem to be indefinitely delayed. There is also an imposed curfew after nightfall due to some ongoing murders the news never seems to give much detail about... Additionally, while their non-Awakened family are not their 'true' family, they will still feel like family. They may worry about them, warn them to be careful, and check up on them from time to time. Players are freely allowed to play and NPC their other family members once accepted, or even make plans with new players to form families. Of course, this answer will change as the game progresses. The seeds of rebellion may need to be sowed in places beyond this city... Can my character leave the city? Currently, no. Again, planes and buses out of the city always seem to be delayed and vehicles attempting to leave will either break down near the city's bridges or accidents will happen, blocking traffic. Don't ask 'normal' citizens about it either, since they won't realize it seems weird. After all, there are plenty of people coming in. Can my character create a stink about the situation or go to the media regarding the anomalies? For the most part, they'll just get treated like a crazy person. It might draw unwanted attention and ire and paint a target on their back. Remember, it's a rebellion, but it's meant to be a stealthy, nightly one. Trying to force out the truth by shocking it into those who aren't Awakened can be extremely dangerous and highly lethal to normal citizens. Where does my character stay and live? They continue to stay with their families lead the same life they had in the city before being Awakened. Exchange students can live in student dorms. There's no specific area for players to live in. As long as it seems reasonable, we will let you do as you want. Planning at night for the rebellion tends to be done in closed homes and the main school, Green Valley. Why plan at the school? In part, as a callback to the Persona series. Story-wise, the school harbors many of its own secrets and areas to discover. Since there are 10,000 students from all grades aged between 4-30, a few more there won't draw that much attention. It is also where the two Telephone Viruses, Luci and Lily, lead the Awakened after their first full night. Who are Luci and Lily? They claim to be Viruses working with the Velvet Room. While themselves not residents, they have their own purposes to fulfill and are ready to help the Awakened in any way they can. Just don't expect them to explain everything. They enjoy riddles and making characters think for themselves. What happens if I drop? There are two options when a character is dropped. The most common is that a character's heart wasn't able to take on the task of rebellion for long and they revert to their 'sleeping' state just like they were before being Awakened. Characters who are dropped that had relationships to other characters in the game (say they believed they were father and son before being Awakened) would typically lose that connection and the remaining Awakened characters would not be able to reawaken them and reestablish the same relationship. In simple terms, a dropped character would lose their old life and start a new one somewhere else in the city. There is some small comfort that they are out there, still alive. However, lately thiat has changed and the dropped characters can stay close with their family, they simply won't remember their time as 'Awakened'. Which brings us to the second option: death. It is possible for a character to become a victim of the murders or fall to the Shadows in battle. However, an outright death should be planned with any close CR since it may be highly traumatic for whatever characters are left behind in the aftermath. If we find out that the character's death drop wasn't brought to the attention of close castmates or close city AU castmates or if we get a private complaint that they weren't contacted, the death will instead be treated as a normal drop. Note that their death does not mean that the character cannot be apped for again, however they will need to be a different version of that character and will not have the previous memories of being Awakened.

Re: Parasite/possessed characters! How do they work? A few stock examples would be:

Ryou Bakura (Yu-Gi-Oh): Possessed by the spirit of a cursed magical item, the Millennium Ring.

Rhys (Borderlands): He has an obnoxious AI living in his cybernetics (arm, eye, head).

Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill): Wears a sentient school uniform.

Sal (Parasite, by Mira Grant): A parasite which took over its braindead host and believes itself to be the body's original owner with amnesia.

In the cases of the characters you've listed:
Ryou Bakura - He would be uncursed, but he could regain his memories of being possessed along with the rest of his memory.
Rhys - He's now AI-free! If you want his demonic Persona to take on some of the AI's personality characteristics, that would be acceptable.
Ryuko Matoi - She would no longer have her school uniform.
Sal - Sal would continue to think they're the original owner of the body and regain memories accordingly.

Basically, in cases where the parasite is the character, they will be brought into the game as-is. In cases where the parasite has a personality of their own that is separate from the character, they will not be brought into the game.

Am I correct in assuming that when it says you can canon update your first character to an AU, this means a non-canon AU? And if that's right, is this something we can app our second character as immediately, or would we have to do the canon->AU update for all subsequent characters as well?

This means a non-canon AU, yes! And you could app a non-canon AU for your second without the update. As a note: The update would also require mod approval if you went from canon--> canon au for your 1st character.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Awakened characters have yellow eyes. If your character canonically has yellow eyes, I would assume that'd need to be changed for purposes of the game?

They do! Honestly, there's no wrong way to go at it - you can decide that during the day their eyes are a different color when not Awakened or just give them more glowy-yellow eyes when they change at night, or they just keep the same color and that's something that doesn't change about them.

Will there be any age limitations on characters? I am considering a character who is 17, but currently appears to be 7.

Also, if a character is currently affected by something that alters their appearance, would this ever change in game? Would their non-awakened lives be based on their true appearance or how they currently appear?

There is no age limitations. We made outfits for elementary for this very reason, but they wouldn't be able to participate in any adult-themed logs (by this we mean something that would be 18+, not sending off characters into an event that only adults can participate).

The non-awakened selves would be entirely up to you. If you want your character to attend 1st or 2nd year then be a 17 year old at night, or being 17 during the day and stuck in their child appearance at night due to their canon, that's fine!

Will challenge apps be accepted or is it on a first come first serve basis with reservations?

We will allow one reserve slot for a particular character during the reserve period.

However, reserves will expire two days after applications open, and then all other applications for that character will be judged against each other.

Re: Persona creation and tricky canon questions

The situation with Waver here is slightly complicated, due to Fate/ having the Master/Servant dynamic which itself runs parallel to Personas in several respects (although in this case Servants are also appable characters in their own right), and due to Waver's own status as being a Servant of sorts at a later canonpoint or whichever parallel universe that particular storyline is taking place in.

To draw this short, I'm under the assumption that I can't draw upon the Servant, Rider for Waver's Persona. However, can I draw upon Waver himself at a future canonpoint/in an alternate universe during his time as a Servant while developing his Persona?

Quick question about non-human characters, like Mipha here - would they look the same, or would they need to be humanized?

All characters get humanized during the day - at night they would have their older look, to a maximum of 8 feet tall for anything that is taller in their canon.

Another quick question - I know you said characters don't keep any items from their canons, but in the case of more mundane items such as musical instruments/toys, would it be possible for their AU self to have a version of that item as well?

It wouldn't be the exact same ones as their canon, but they could be facsimiles.

For example if they had a certain teddy bear that their mother gave them in canon, the teddy bear they'd have his this world would have different fur, wouldn't look the same either. Everything would be a bit 'off' if that makes sense.

Quick question about Persona elements:

What sort of spells would go under the Psy(chic?), Nuclear and Light elements?

There's not much difference in having a certain type of spell group vs the other apart from having different weaknesses and monsters in game will weak or stronger to a particular kinds of spell.

You would start with only the first solo spell for whatever element(s) you pick.

Re: Appable characters.

If a canon has no English translation and only has very very little, close to, or no information in English available, can they still be apped?

Unfortunately, if there's no English or French (since one of the mods speaks that language) information for us to look into and compare to your application, that character cannot be applied for.

Some random questions regarding school life, because yes I'm that dweeb already outlining possible things regarding my potential applicant.


1. What calendar system is the school year going to follow, and what holidays will it observe? Is it going to stay true to form like the games and follow Japan's school system with a Spring start but with more generic named holidays to help keep where Eddan is located vague; or will it follow an American or Europe type schedule?

2. Outside of typical clubs and sports groups, would there already be a group set up that is basically just a cover for Awakened kids to have an excuse for why they keep loitering around on campus after school and not studying? Or could one form if an Awakened teacher sponsors it?

3. If a kid goes to a school that isn't Green Valley before Awakening, could they feasibly transfer (even if only during certain times of the school year.) into Green Valley? I mostly ask since you do state that while it is the biggest school it's not the only one so there is a chance not everyone would end up going to school there.

4. Regarding future app cycles, if a canonmate shows up. Can the excuse of them being in different classes or something was somehow keeping them from recognizing one another until both were Awakened be used or would the newly brought in characters have to transfer into the school? Also in this regard if someone apps someone that is in the same age range as other characters could the same be feasible especially regarding setting up their Day life CR? (Like could they establish sharing the same class/classes and then have it dovetail into a "you're like me too?" realization when both are Awakened.)

5. I actually don't have a five at the moment.

1 - We're still ironing this part out, so I will say to stay tuned! That being said, it will probably end up being a mesh of many things.

2 - There is no official 'mod' or story group that is set up, but players will be highly encouraged to create their own and work together creating them. Having an Awakened teacher would be highly advantageous, certainly.

3 - They can, or for the sake of story line, it's also possible for them to go study there. They do have a lot of 'the best of' around so going for 'the best library' and staying at night would be a perfectly feasible excuse.

4- They wouldn't even know they have castmate around until that castmate is awakened. They might even be close family members, but until that other person has an Awakening it's basically impossible to know if your teacher or your friend or your brother is someone you knew.

As for having class/family/work CR with others, there will always be a small round after people are accepted where they can set up pre-awakening CR.

Also, I saw mention of clothes changing when a character is Awakened. Is that to what they usually wear in canon or something else?

Anime hair and eye colors are fine during their normal day.

The clothes a character wears when they're Awakened can be influenced by a canon outfit, certainly, but it's meant to be tied more to their demons and their inner heart conflict. Basically, they're part inner self and part rule of cool.

I apologize if this has been answered already, but... can PCs high five their persona? This is very important.

For a more general question, how would persona skills be used ICly? Do we call out attack names like Pokémon or is it just telepathic, or does it vary on the character? And for the support spells that aren't visibly obvious (Stone Feet for example), how would it take effect/would it be visible, or just a 'hidden stat boost' sort of thing?

Hell yesh they can high five their Personas. It is a super important question, I agree.

Persona skills can be used as per how the user likes using them, if that makes sense. In the game, characters had different catch phrases when using them, if you want, there's nothing stopping you from having your character call out the attacks either.

As for the support spells, that's entirely up to your character. If you want them to have stone-like feet if they are attack and the passive is there, go for it, if you just want a hidden stat boost, that's also fine, if you want them to walk around with stone-like shoes that's also acceptable! Go for whatever you enjoy the most.

A question about demons, specifically Dantalion!

Can I take this as having it change appearance being allowed?

This is more of "it depends" situation. You could have a part of it change appearance, but it shouldn't be used as a way to get an extra power out of the Persona (so being able to look like other Personas or pretending to be a part of the environment, for example.)

The best suggestions we have for you here would be either to give him ever-changing colors, or clothing on top of his typical form that change every summon, but would still be easily identifiable as your character's persona from a glance.

Just a clarification that is probably obvious but I am failing reading comprehension at the moment- do characters get all their memories at once when they're Awakened, or is it a process that chances them to their canon self immediately? Also, especially regarding the yellow eyes, do they count as 'Awakened' all the time or just at night?

No worries there's a lot of information to digest.

They get all of their memories once they are Awakened up to whatever Canon Point you decide. Before that, during a week, they'll get little glimpses into their past lives, feeling something's wrong, headaches, etc like in the prompts.

Just at night when summoning, correct! They would have whatever 'normal' color it is for them during the day and when they aren't using their Personas at night. They might change yellow during times of stress or extreme emotions at night as well, if you so desire.

You're free to apply if you think there's enough, but we ask that the relevant information be linked as part of your history section for ease of review. We can't guarantee that we will accept the application and it is possible that we may reject it if we feel there isn't sufficient information.

Hi, it's me again... can Personas give off light (be used as a flashlight)? It's oddly specific, but for simple day to day tasks like using Personas to carry heavy things, is that workable? Or do we have to claim/earn a spell that allows them to light up dark places

They can't give off that amount of light to be useful like a flashlight (glowing eyes = okay, lighting up an entire room = no). Since personas only come out for battle, they wouldn't be useful to carry heavy things either.

However, this does give us good ideas of what to put in as possible rewards down the line, so thank you!

A few question about the AppleNET chatroom system!

1) Are they allowed to enter fake names/psuedonyms when prompted by the system (like in the first prompt of the TDM)?
2) Can they upload images?
3) Is there a private messaging function for one-on-one convos?

1) The first prompt is meant for the character to react to a name\nickname they have in canon, so an alias that's applicable to canon is fine, but entering a fake name wouldn't work in that situation. Later on, yes this will be a possibility.

2) Yes they can.

3) Yes, but it would not be available for the group until you get to the 3rd prompt, storywise.

Hi mods! I also have a few questions re: network things.

1. Are other methods of communications available, app-wise? Can they still use Twitter/FB/etc.? How about normal calls and texts? Or are characters only allowed to use AppleNET?
2. Can the app be uninstalled? What happens if you try to delete it?
3. Fushimi is a programmer. Will he be able to look at AppleNET's apk/source code? If he is successful, what will he find?
4. Fushimi doesn't trust AppleNET, so he would probably make a separate encrypted chatroom app for the very few people he's close to. Is this possible/okay to do?

1 - There are Twitter\FB equivalent in the city and the characters are allowed to use them as long as its clearly marked in the tag. By default, a post in appleNET (the dw community) would be on appleNET.

You can also have phone calls and texts as well, players will be asked to set up a PM box for their character once accepted.

2 - You can try to uninstall the app, it would just show up again. Multiple attempts would probably get it angry.

3 - The source code file, if he somehow found it, is empty. Almost like this thing's cheating at existing.

4 - It's possible, but he'll probably find out very quickly that AppleNET might be the only trustworthy thing around, for all it's strangeness. Even the best programmer coding the most encrypted chatroom that isn't AppleNET could potentially be watched.

This might be an odd question, but I felt it was worth asking all the same!

For the IC Arcana questionnaire - will it be before our character Awakens (and thus gains memories), after our character Awakens, or is it something that'll be made clear in time? Most of my prospective characters would... probably respond completely differently, depending on what they remember, so I have reasons for being curious.

... also for silly reasons: what are the text capabilities like on the phone app? Specifically, can characters play with font types/colours, emojis, and so on. I play occasional Homestucks, it's in my bones.

(Edit to add: The below question gave me an idea for another question, sorry- what's the general stance on player-owned pets, not as regains but as general things? Obviously anything sentient is out, but would characters just owning things like cats and dogs be fine? Is it also allowed to have said cat/dog resemble a pet from back home? It wouldn't be the pet, but like a bootleg knockoff.)

IC Arcana would be answered from the Awakened character perspective. We say IC because it wouldn't be a survey they'd see in game, it's one we want you to fill out as your character so you'll get a good chance to roll the most fitting Arcana for them.

Question! The faq says it might be possible to regain items in the future, but would you be able to regain not-so-inanimate things like, say, a pokemon/digimon/pet/friendly talking fox? Just curious!

It would depend on a few things;

1) The character shouldn't be applicable in canon. So if they have enough of their own in terms of background, they would be refused right out.
2) It's not been ruled out, but that type of regain in general would be on a case-to-case basis. Additionally, if we do accept them, they'd also need a day form. Like a Pikachu might look like a rat during the day to most people.
3) If\when we do allow this type of regain it would probably be one of the hardest to obtain.

Hey! Running in with some questions, hopefully they're not redundant ;^;

1) Regarding Awakenings, is there an expected timeline for when these are to happen? As in, when characters are accepted into the game, are they expected to have their Awakenings within the first month/very soon? OR are we able to play out a few months of the AU environment itself, to set up CR and make their Awakening more impactful?

2) Regarding Canon AUs, is there a percentage of head canon/canon required for the history section? My character has a canon AU, and the events of that story can be used as history, but don't reach back into his childhood (though this can be inferred from canon and made more-or-less parallel). I figure, since Cloud from Kingdom Hearts is appable, and we only have in-game plot information on him (and no childhood backstory), that this is permissible, but I wanted to check!

3) Regarding AU family structure, will there be any opportunity for players to put their characters into a RNG for family members? Plotting is awesome and fun, but RNG always supplies for some really interesting dynamics, so if that's a possibility, I will hold off on planning around.

1) There will be an Awakening log for the the first group of applicants, which will be about 3 weeks into the game's start, giving people time to play out their AUs, get a few clues from AppleNET, and interact before their eyes are opened.

In future rounds, the timing of Awakenings may change slightly (due to plot lines), but each reservation round should have typically the same amount of time (3-4 weeks) before a character Awakens. Anything that deviates from the norm will be marked clearly on the reservation post (for example, say we have, for plot reasons a group of people who are awakened only after a few days from joining the game).

Additionally, you'll still have plenty of time after Awakeing for your character to deal with balancing their AU life with what they've learned about their real life as well.

2) If you need to fill in blanks in a Canon AU character's backstory, you can definitely refer back to original version of the character to flesh things out. Just make sure it's clear in your application when you're inferring things from the source canon or using headcanon to fill in the blanks. If we feel that the application relies too heavily on headcanon (more than 50% of the application), we will either ask for revisions for more canon support or we may reject the application if we feel there isn't enough canon material for the character to be applicable.

3) This is actually a great suggestion, and we'll make sure to offer it during the first AU planning post (and subsequent ones) for players who want to get RNGd with others!

Catchall question party, re: debuffs, FAQ disparities, Tropes, and Dis Bitch Tho

1) The most non-stupid way I can explain Ikuko's Myriad Issues is she's technically one character while being two characters who are extremely different while still being the same person in a meatsuit. Alternatively, Ikuko is Featherine trying to roleplay an NPC. Pre-awakening, she's entirely the NPC, but would Awakening be Entirely Featherine, the conglomeration of bad writing that is both of them/her combined, or is that left up to my discretion on how to be the biggest jerk?

2) The website FAQ says no OCs for a first character but the FAQ here says yes OCs for a first. I'm still waffling between Dis Bitch Tho and another, so I just want to know which one is the More Legit of the FAQs.

3) Debuffs: I know that personas are rolled out by you guys, but if I go navigator and roll debuff/heals, would it be possible to do the heals as single-target/all-enemy Spirit/Life Drain mechanics instead of the usual Mediarama? Note that this is obviously not gained immediately and only pops up later in the evolution of said persona etcetc

4) Also what's your thoughts/stance on the Token New Student Rumormill Drama shenanigans? Ie new transfer/new to the city/hospitalized for most of the school year/Hello Any Persona Protag Ever/miscellaneous other live obligations preventing them from entering the city beforehand? A case where they haven't lived in Eddan their whole life, but still don't think there's anything strange about what goes down here. Bueno or no bueno

1) We're sorry, but we don't quite understand the question. Do you intend to app Ikuko Hachijo or Featherine?

2) This was a mistake on our part! The OC should be under the 2nd character only and the FAQ here has been modified to fit the website one.

3) Personas each have a list of possible spells in the future. Drains, for now, won't be part of them, unfortunately.

4) That's fine! Characters can remember living somewhere else before Eddan, although their memories won't be as clear as being here, and we do allow exchange students (as an example). A freshly arrived character that's just been here for a few weeks before Awakening would be acceptable as well.

Do alternate forms/outfits last all night, or just while using Personas?

Also, if a character has built-in weaponry, like a cyborg, do they get that exact weaponry back when they Awaken, since it's technically part of them? And does it count as their Persona weapon?

Characters get to keep their outfits during the entire night, along with their weapons.

That depends on what the weaponry is and how much of it there are. For example, a character who has a cyborg arm that shoots bullets could use that to count as their 'gun'. Basically, you'd have to limit it to the same rules as everyone else, one physical-hitting weapon, one gun-like weapon.

Otherwise, the cyborg parts essentially become eye-candy and don't give them other advantages compared to other characters (if their legs let them jump high before, for example, that wouldn't work here)
